Projeto nacional IndieLights revoluciona o paradigma da música independente no streaming 

Os músicos independentes portugueses têm uma nova ferramenta para os apoiar na promoção e divulgação do seu trabalho nas principais plataformas de streaming.

A Associação de Músicos Artistas e Editoras Independentes (AMAEI) e a GDA – Gestão dos Direitos dos Artistas lançaram, em parceria, o IndieLights, um projeto inovador que pretende transformar a forma como a música independente é descoberta e apreciada nas principais plataformas de streaming.

O IndieLights é a resposta dos seus promotores à crescente necessidade de dar visibilidade aos artistas independentes portugueses, cujas obras nas plataformas de streaming ficam, muitas vezes, à margem de um mercado cada vez mais competitivo. Para este feito, reúne uma seleção diversificada de playlists com a curadoria de especialistas e lançará, em breve, o podcast Indie Spotlights dedicado exclusivamente à música independente nacional.

Diversidade e alcance internacional

A missão do IndieLights é ampliar o alcance dos artistas independentes portugueses através da combinação meticulosa das suas obras em playlists agrupadas por estilo musical, tema e humor. Tendo em conta o potencial de exportação da música portuguesa, este projeto tem como objetivo futuro desenvolver playlists que combinem música nacional e internacional, reeducando dessa forma os algoritmos das plataformas, que minimizam a diversidade da música portuguesa e a agrupam toda numa mesma categoria que limita os artistas geograficamente.

“As playlists que criámos nas plataformas de streaming e reunimos no IndieLights integram artistas independentes dos mais variados géneros musicais. Com esta parceria, pretendemos romper as limitações tradicionais colocadas à visibilidade dos músicos independentes nas plataformas de streaming”, afirma Nuno Saraiva, Diretor Executivo da AMAEI.

Com efeito, as playlists são peças fundamentais para se conseguir maximizar o alcance, envolvimento e sucesso dos músicos em plataformas de streaming. Aliás, atualmente constituem uma das principais ferramentas para levar os ouvintes a descobrir novas sonoridades. A presença de uma música em playlists aumenta significativamente a sua exposição.

“As plataformas de streaming usam algoritmos que sugerem músicas aos utilizadores, com base nas suas preferências e hábitos de escuta. Isso faz com que as músicas listadas em playlists tenham mais possibilidades de serem recomendadas pelo algoritmo, aumentando, desse modo, o número de reproduções”, explica Francisco Borges, representante da GDA.

Esta abordagem que visa, também, a internacionalização, não só beneficia os músicos em termos de visibilidade, como também aumenta os seus ganhos com o streaming, um aspeto crucial para a sustentabilidade dos artistas em mercados mais pequenos.

Curadoria de excelência

Uma das grandes apostas é a curadoria estratégica de playlists criadas nas plataformas de streaminge reunidas no IndieLights. Para além da seleção da própria direção do projeto, a AMAEI e a GDA convidaram personalidades e entidades de renome no setor musical para poder abarcar a maior variedade possível de estilos, reconhecendo a diversidade crescente e fusão de géneros da música independente nacional. Esta curadoria cuidada garante que cada playlist seja mais do que uma coleção de músicas, mas sim uma experiência auditiva rica, capaz de captar os ouvintes e conquistar a sua fidelidade. Alguns dos nomes já confirmados para colaborar neste projeto são António Freitas (Alta Tensão, Antena 3), Fernando Alvim (Prova Oral, Antena 3), Maria Seixas Correia (Curto Circuito, SIC Radical), Manuela Paraíso (da antiga SBSR FM), Isilda Sanches (Pontos de Luz, Antena 3 e Observador), Vitor Belanciano (Jornalista do Público e Crítico Cultural), e ainda as entidades Hot Club Portugal e Metropolitana.

Este é um projeto cujo objetivo é apresentar gradualmente playlists que, idealmente, incluam toda a música independente. Por isso, está em progresso constante tanto ao nível das playlists divulgadas como quanto aos curadores convidados.

🇬🇧 National project IndieLights revolutionises the paradigm of independent music on streaming

Portuguese independent musicians have a new tool to support them in promoting and sharing their work on major streaming platforms.

AMAEI (Association of Independent Musicians, Artists, and Labels) and GDA (Artists’ Rights Management) have launched, in partnership, IndieLights, an innovative project that aims to transform how independent music is discovered and appreciated on major streaming platforms.

IndieLights is the response from its promoters to the growing need to give visibility to Portuguese independent artists, whose works on streaming platforms often remain on the sidelines of an increasingly competitive market. To achieve this, the project gathers a diverse selection of playlists curated by specialists and will soon launch the Indie Spotlights podcast, dedicated exclusively to national independent music.

Diversity and international reach

The mission of IndieLights is to broaden the reach of Portuguese independent artists by meticulously combining their works into playlists grouped by musical style, theme, and mood. Given the potential for the export of Portuguese music, the future goal of this project is to develop playlists that mix national and international music, thereby re-educating the platforms’ algorithms, which minimize the diversity of Portuguese music by grouping it all into one category that geographically limits artists.

“The playlists we’ve created on streaming platforms and gathered in IndieLights feature independent artists from a wide variety of musical genres. With this partnership, we aim to break the traditional barriers to visibility that independent musicians face on streaming platforms,” says Nuno Saraiva, Executive Director of AMAEI.

Indeed, playlists are crucial tools for maximizing the reach, engagement, and success of musicians on streaming platforms. Nowadays, they are one of the primary means to help listeners discover new sounds. A song’s presence on playlists significantly increases its exposure.

“Streaming platforms use algorithms that suggest music to users based on their preferences and listening habits. This means that songs listed in playlists have a higher chance of being recommended by the algorithm, thus increasing the number of streams,” explains Francisco Borges, GDA representative.

This approach, which also aims at internationalization, benefits musicians not only in terms of visibility but also by increasing their earnings from streaming, a crucial aspect for the sustainability of artists in smaller markets.

Excellence in curation

One of the major focuses is the strategic curation of playlists created on streaming platforms and gathered in IndieLights. In addition to selections made by the project’s own leadership, AMAEI and GDA have invited prominent figures and entities in the music industry to cover the widest variety of styles possible, recognizing the growing diversity and fusion of genres in national independent music. This careful curation ensures that each playlist is more than just a collection of songs but a rich auditory experience capable of captivating listeners and earning their loyalty. Some of the confirmed collaborators for this project include António Freitas (Alta Tensão, Antena 3), Fernando Alvim (Prova Oral, Antena 3), Maria Seixas Correia (Curto Circuito, SIC Radical), Manuela Paraíso (formerly SBSR FM), Isilda Sanches (Pontos de Luz, Antena 3 and Observador), Vitor Belanciano (journalist and cultural critic at Público), as well as entities like Hot Club Portugal and Metropolitana.

This project aims to gradually present playlists that ideally include all independent music. Therefore, it is in constant progress, both in terms of the playlists released and the curators invited.
